The music of the Italian National Anthem, chosen in 1946, was composed by Michele Novaro (1818-1885) in 1847, on a text by Goffredo Mameli. It is currently known with the title of “Fratelli d’Italia”, but the original title was “Il Canto degli Italiani”. To remember Michele Novaro and to help young composers, the International Composition Competition “Michele Novaro” has been presented. It was conceived by the Italian Parliament member, Hon. Lorenzo Becattini, and is organized by Associazione Mendelssohn with the support of Italgas. The project, lasting three years, foresees three editions, each focused on a specific theme. The awards ceremony of each of the different editions will take place in three cities that have been the capital of Italy: Turin, Florence and Rome. The competition is open to composers under 30, and the deadline if the first edition is Sept. 30, 2016. The final evening of the first edition will take place in Torino, in the Great Hall of the Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi”, on Dec. 2, 2016.
